In 1920, E. Segar began the comic strip known as "Thimble Theatre." The principal characters were Olive Oyl, her sweetheart Ham Gravy, and her brother Castor Oyl.
Much of the action centered around the adventures of Castor Oyl and Ham Gravy until 1929 when Popeye first appeared in the strip.
