THE MEN WHO DRIVE THE TRACTORS THAT MOW
      THE GRASS ON THE FREEWAY

            By Lefty

I heard all them trucking songs
On the radio.
But there's a crew of good old boys
That you would like to know.

They do their work
And never shirk,
Even though the sun is hot;
Then draw their pay and go to town
And then they drink a lot!

They're the men who drive the tractors
That mow the grass on the freeway!
They're the men who drive the tractors
That now the grass on the freeway!

When I was twenty years old
I put my application in.
They never would have hired me
If it wasn't for Uncle Ben.

He gave one thousand dollars to
Commissioner Warren Penn.
I am just a tractor driver and
That's all I've ever been.

We are the men who drive the tractors
That mow the grass on the freeway.
We are the men who drive the tractors
That mow the grass on the freeway.

We do not fear the steepest grades
Not even one-to-one.
We just keep on driving
Until the job is done.

Unless, of course, the tractor breaks
Or we run out of gas.
And then you'll find us sitting on
Our fannies in the grass.

We are the men who drive the tractors
That mow the grass on the freeway.
We are the men who drive the tractors
That mow the grass on the freeway.

Long live the tractor drivers
May their glory never fade.
It won't be long till I retire
I almost got it made!

I have some money in the bank
The state of Texas paid
When I lost my little finger to
The moving rotor blade!

We are the men who drive the tractors
That mow the grass on the freeway.
We are the men who drive the tractors
That mow the grass on the freeway.
